Abstract

This expanded cross‐cultural study probes the varied beliefs surrounding dream interpretation among adults in four culturally distinct regions: the United States (Western), China (East Asian), India (South Asian), and Nigeria (West African). Building on classical psychoanalytic (Freud, 1900) and cognitive‐emotional (Cartwright, 2010) theories, as well as indigenous dream frameworks such as the Zhougong Jie Meng and Yoruba priestly traditions, we surveyed 200 individuals (50 per region) using a rigorously validated 25‐item Dream Beliefs Questionnaire. Analysis incorporated descriptive statistics, chi‐square tests for categorical differences in high‐agreement items (scores ≥4), and one‐way ANOVAs with Tukey post‐hoc comparisons. Results reveal that Western participants predominantly attribute dreams to unconscious psychological processes and frequently engage in self‐reflection practices (e.g., journaling), whereas East Asian and West African respondents lean heavily toward spiritual and prophetic attributions, often consulting cultural specialists (ancestors, spiritual leaders).

South Asian beliefs exhibit a syncretic blend, with substantial acknowledgment of both spiritual and psychological meanings. These findings significantly extend the literature by mapping how deep‐rooted cultural worldviews shape dream significance and practice. Clinically, they underscore the necessity for mental health professionals to integrate culturally congruent dream frameworks into therapeutic contexts. The study concludes by recommending culturally tailored dream‐analysis interventions and outlining avenues for future qualitative and longitudinal research to probe narrative dimensions and changes over the lifespan.
